The Search for Skip James — Back on the Air

Back on the Air: A Month of Music, Love, and Magic

I’m back on Shady Pines Radio, spinning records and doing my favorite thing on earth after a month-long summer hiatus. Big love to Brian and Callie—the heartbeat of this station—for keeping the flame lit. They pulled off one hell of a Shady Pines Music Festival, and I’m grateful to be part of this crew.

This return to the airwaves comes on the heels of what might’ve been the most electric month of my life. A blur, a dream. One I’ll be unpacking for years.

It started with Katie and me getting married at Pendarvis Farm over 4th of July weekend—a place already full of meaning for us. It wasn’t Pickathon, but the spirit of the land was there. Surrounded by our people, we stepped into a new chapter.

Not long after, we flew to Japan. And honestly—how do you describe a place that rearranges your senses? The record stores alone—Tower, Disk Union, City Country—felt like sacred ground. I came home with a suitcase full of vinyl and a heart full of wonder.

Then—Pickathon. Back home. One of the best festivals on the planet, hands down. This year’s lineup was next-level: Rosali, Dave Nance, SML, Taj Mahal, Turkish psych, country deep cuts… DJs weaving dreamscapes. Shoutout to DJ Stone Bunny (who also played our wedding) and DJ Tobias, whose sets always tilt the world a few degrees sideways.

Wedding. Japan. Fuji Rock (more on that another time). Pickathon. All in one month. Music, mountains, neon, campfires, connection. I’m still spinning from it all.

And in a time when fascism isn’t just a distant threat but a daily reality, these moments reminded me what actually holds us together: community, creativity, wildness, and love.

So here I am—back on the air, playing records I brought back from Japan. It’s a weird, joyful, unpredictable set. My favorite kind. Tune in and you might hear something you’ve never heard before—or something old, flipped on its head.
